At a recent dinner party, I met a lady whose brother and sister-in-law, US residents, adopted a little African-American girl. The lady took pride in talking about this little niece; she told us how beautifully the girl speaks in the adopted parents' mother tongue, Bengali. It made my heart strangely full. Last month, at another get-together, I met a mother and daughter-the latter in her early 20's, studying to be a historian is slightly chubby and dark-skinned. The mother, probably in her early 50's was constantly worrying about her daughter's weight. She has been monitoring her diet and she even joked with us about her daughter's skin colour. The daughter stayed silent, sipping on her red wine, without any reaction. Her eyes vacant; the mother's scathing sarcasm, her taunts, the way everyone laughed insensitively-it was difficult to see and believe the way women treat and marginalize other women, sometimes even their own child.

Sexting or "sex texting" is sending or getting sexually explicit or suggestive images, messages, or video on a smartphone or through the Internet. Most teens have various ways to get online, Smartphones, tablets, and laptops all can be used in private. It's very easy for teens to create and share personal photos and videos of themselves without their parents knowing about it. Girls may sext as a joke, as a way of getting attention, or because of peer pressure or pressure from guys. Guys sometimes blame "pressure from friends. And teens get some backup for that when lewd celebrity pictures and videos go mainstream. Instead of ruined careers or humiliation, the consequences are often greater fame and reality TV shows. Teens should understand that messages, pictures, or videos sent via the Internet or smartphones are never truly private or anonymous. In seconds they can be out there for all the world to see.
